Pilea cadierei, also known as the aluminium plant or watermelon pilea, is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the nettle family, Urticaceae. It is native to China (provinces of Guizhou and Yunnan) and Vietnam and it has been awarded with the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This genus is popular for its endurance and relative unpretentiousness and its ability to grow both in greenhouses and at home - some species, such as the Pilea Kadie, can grow very fast. Pilea plants typically grow in the forests of tropical zones worldwide, excluding Australia, and often have succulent, water-storing leaves. Fossils of Pilea species have been found dating back over 5 million years ago!
