Taxonomy

Acer capillipes, also known as Kyushu maple or red snakebark maple, is a small deciduous tree native to mountainous regions in Japan. It belongs to the same taxonomic section as other snakebark maples such as A. pensylvanicum, A. davidii, and A. rufinerve. Typically found growing alongside mountain streams, Acer capillipes is characterized by its white-striped young branches and 3-lobed leaves, which can reach a length of 12cm. In autumn, the leaves turn a vibrant red and yellow. The tree can grow up to 10-15m tall, with a spreading crown of slender branches. Its smooth bark is olive-green with vertical white stripes and small brownish lenticels. The leaves, measuring 10-15cm long and 6-12cm broad, have a serrated margin, conspicuous veining, and a reddish petiole. In late spring, the tree produces small greenish-yellow flowers in drooping racemes, followed by attractive pink fruits. The samara nutlets have a 2cm long wing. Acer capillipes is a popular ornamental tree due to its striped bark and vibrant autumn foliage. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Lighting

Japanese Striped Maple thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure.
