Aeonium hierrense

Aeonium hierrense is an evergreen succulent in the Crassulaceae family. It comes from northeastern El Hierro in the Canary Islands. Its native range has a subtropical climate. The plant forms a small, upright subshrub with a large leaf rosette. The common name El Hierro giant houseleek reflects this broad crown. It keeps its leaves through the year.

Garden plants reach about 3.3–4.9 feet [1–1.5 metres] tall. Their spread reaches 1.6–3.3 feet [0.5–1 metre]. The RHS description gives a shorter height of 3.9 feet [1.2 metres]. Plants take 10–20 years to reach their full size. The stem usually stays unbranched and carries one rosette at its tip. Its surface is smooth or marked with shallow cracks. The rosette can span about 2 feet [0.6 metres]. Smooth, dark green leaves show red or purple tints. Fine hairs line the leaf edges.

A broad head of pink and white flowers may appear in spring. This flowerhead can reach about 1.6 feet [0.5 metres] across. The large leaf crown and upright stem give the plant a bold shape. The RHS lists it for containers, patios, and sheltered courtyard gardens. It also suits subtropical planting schemes where conditions allow. Its evergreen leaves provide interest outside the flowering season. Containers offer a way to display its form in small spaces.

Grow it in full sun with shelter from exposed conditions. The RHS recommends a cool greenhouse or conservatory for cultivation. Use a gritty, peat-free mix based on loam. Sandy or loamy soils suit it when water drains freely. It accepts acid, neutral, and alkaline soil. Let the growing mix dry a little between waterings. The plant resists drought, but its roots still need good drainage. Its UK hardiness rating is H1C, with a 5–10°C minimum temperature range. In the UK, it can stand outside during summer.

Routine pruning is not needed, which helps keep care simple. The RHS lists it among plants for low-maintenance displays. Check for mealybugs, since these pests may attack it.
