Carex aka Sedge

Taxonomy

Carex is a vast genus of more than 2,000 species of grass-like plants in the family Cyperaceae, commonly known as sedges. Other members of the family Cyperaceae are also called sedges, but those of the genus Carex are considered true sedges, making it the most species-rich genus in the family. The study of Carex is known as caricology. One specific variety of Carex is the EverColor® 'Everillo' Sedge Grass. This evergreen, clump-forming sedge has long, glossy ribbon-like dark green foliage that curls towards the tips. It is a versatile plant that can be grown in pots, hanging baskets, or cascading over a rockery. EverColor® 'Everillo' Sedge Grass thrives in average, well-drained soil with consistent moisture, but it can also tolerate dry shade. The vibrant color of the foliage develops best in bright shade or dappled light, and the plant performs well with morning sun in cooler regions. With its flowing foliage resembling tiny fountains, this variety adds a touch of elegance to any garden or landscape.

How to care for Sedge

Difficulty

With a bit of knowledge and dedication, you can successfully care for Sedge, making it a rewarding choice for those seeking a moderate challenge.

Lighting

Sedge requires abundant, bright and direct light. Placing it less than one foot from a window is the best way to make sure the plant receives enough light to survive and thrive. Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold. With some care and attention, your Sedge will be sure to bring you many years of beauty and enjoyment.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it is common for Sedge plants to go dormant and their growth rate may slow down. Therefore, the amount of waterings should be spaced out more.
