Castanea aka Chestnut

Castanea, also known as chestnuts, are deciduous trees and shrubs belonging to the genus Castanea in the beech family Fagaceae. These trees are native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The name "chestnut" refers to both the trees themselves and the edible nuts they produce. It is important to note that horse chestnuts (genus Aesculus) are not true chestnuts but are named so due to their similar appearance, although they are mildly poisonous to humans. Additionally, water chestnuts, which are tubers of an aquatic herbaceous plant, should not be confused with true chestnuts. The chestnut oak and the American beech, both belonging to the Fagaceae family, are often mistaken for chestnut trees but are different species. Brazil nuts, known as "Brasil chestnuts" or "chestnuts from Pará," are unrelated to chestnuts. One specific variety of chestnut is the 'Marigoule,' which is a vigorous, deciduous tree with oblong, glossy, dark green leaves. It has serrated edges and an upright to spreading growth habit. In summer, pale yellowish flowers appear in catkins, followed by edible dark brown nuts enclosed in spiky green fruits in early autumn. Castanea sativa, commonly known as the sweet chestnut, Spanish chestnut, or just chestnut, is another species within the Castanea genus. It belongs to the Fagaceae family and is native to Southern Europe and Asia Minor. This substantial and long-lived deciduous tree is widely cultivated worldwide. The chestnut produced by this tree has been used in cooking since ancient times and is highly valued for its edible seeds.
