Cattleya aka Cattleya

Taxonomy

Cattleya, abbreviated as C in trade journals, is a genus of evergreen, epiphytic orchids found from Costa Rica to Argentina. These orchids have upright, cane-like stems that grow from a short creeping rhizome. The stems, known as pseudobulbs, are broader in the upper half and carry a single firm leaf that is 2cm long and 5cm wide. These thick, leathery leaves are broadly-oval and light or mid-green in color. The pseudobulbs of Cattleya are wrapped with thin, papery sheaths that become ribbed as they age. In autumn, large and showy flowers appear on short, terminal stems that arise from the new mature growth. These flowers can measure up to 15cm across and have pale pink petals and sepals. The standout feature is the large lip, which is veined with yellow and dark brown markings and dark pink in the lower half. Cattleya orchids are tender and unique plants that have gained popularity due to their distinct shape and variety of colors. They are also easy to grow, making them a great choice for beginners in houseplant cultivation. One specific type of Cattleya, known as Corsage Orchid or Cattleya labiata, is native to Central and Southern America. It produces purple flowers with yellow centers. The size of these orchids can vary greatly, ranging from 3 to 24 inches (7-60cm) in height and width.

How to care for Cattleya

Difficulty

Cattleya presents a moderate level of care, which allows plant enthusiasts with some experience to expand their skills and knowledge.

Water

Cattleya should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Cattleya loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Cattleya prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

The toxicity level of this plant has not been officially confirmed by Ploi. If there is a possibility of ingestion of plant material with an uncertain toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a medical professional.
