Cattleya labiata aka Orchid
Taxonomy
Cattleya labiata, also known as the crimson cattleya or ruby-lipped cattleya, is the type species of Cattleya and is native to Brazil. This evergreen, epiphytic orchid grows in the northeastern states of Pernambuco and Alagoas. The size and color of the flowers vary depending on the region. Those from Pernambuco are smaller, with lilac-colored flowers, while those from Alagoas are larger. Some varieties, such as Cattleya labiata var. semialba, have large white flowers with a touch of yellow or lilac in the lower part. This plant is typically found growing on trees, but it can also grow on rocks with little soil. It has elongated, upright stems covered in thin, papery sheaths and carries one large, firm leaf. The leaves are oblong, leathery, and mid to dark green in color. In autumn, racemes of pale rose-pink flowers with a darker lip are produced from the tips of new, mature growth. These flowers can measure up to 15cm across. The plant requires regular watering and thrives in abundant sunlight, preferably within 3 feet of a window. It prefers well-draining soil. Pollination is usually performed by insects, particularly male euglossine bees. Cattleya labiata produces a capsule with a large number of seeds. The chromosome number of this species has been determined as 2n = 40, 41, and 46, and the haploid chromosome number as n = 21. Overall, Cattleya labiata is a relatively rare houseplant that adds beauty and vibrancy to any space.
Common names
OrchidHow to care for Orchid
Water
Orchid should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
Soil
Orchid loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.
Lighting
To ensure optimal growth, the Orchid prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
Toxicity
Orchid is not known to cause harm to humans or pets.
