Cyclamen aka Cyclamen
Taxonomy ID: 23490
Cyclamen, also known as Cyclamen persicum, is a genus of tuberous perennials in the Primulaceae family. Native to Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, and parts of the Middle East, these petite flowering plants are valued for their upswept petals and variably patterned leaves. Traditionally classified in the Primulaceae family, Cyclamen was later reclassified in the Myrsinaceae family before being returned to the subfamily Myrsinoideae within Primulaceae.
This collection of tuberous perennials features heart-shaped dark green leaves with silvery markings and flowers with reflexed petals in a range of colors from white to deep pinks and reds. Specifically, the Verano series of Cyclamen persicum hybrids blooms from autumn to winter, while the Picasso series flowers from winter to spring. These plants are commonly grown as houseplants and are especially popular during the winter holiday season. Cyclamen persicum is known for its sweet-scented, small blooms that sit atop long stems, standing above the foliage. The flowers come in shades of pink, purple, red, and white. During its summer dormancy period, the plant dies down to its tubers and then regrows quickly in the fall. If planted in late summer, the seeds will bloom in the following year's winter, approximately 18 months later.
