It is the sole living species in the Davidia genus and was previously categorized with tupelos in the Cornaceae family. This deciduous conical tree can reach heights of up to 15 meters and features broadly ovate mid-green leaves with creamy-white irregular margins. During late spring, it bears small, dark green flowers nestled within large, creamy-white bracts, which give the appearance of a dove. These flowers are later followed by small, ovoid fruits.
