Davidia involucrata aka Handkerchief Tree
Taxonomy ID: 2836
Davidia involucrata, also known as the dove-tree, handkerchief tree, pocket handkerchief tree, or ghost tree, is a medium-sized deciduous tree belonging to the Nyssaceae family. It is the sole living species in the Davidia genus and was previously categorized with tupelos in the Cornaceae family. Fossil species of this tree have been found dating back to the Upper Cretaceous period. This deciduous conical tree can reach heights of up to 15 meters and features broadly ovate mid-green leaves with creamy-white irregular margins. During late spring, it bears small, dark green flowers nestled within large, creamy-white bracts, which give the appearance of a dove. These flowers are later followed by small, ovoid fruits. When cultivated, the Davidia involucrata is a rare tree that grows between 20 and 60 feet tall. It starts as a pyramidal shape in its youth and matures into a rounded tree with dense branching. The distinct feature of two large, white bracts surrounding the flower adds to its unique beauty. This tree thrives in moist, well-drained soil and requires additional watering during drought periods.
