Taxonomy

Distylium racemosum, also known as the isu tree, is a flowering plant native to subtropical eastern Asia. It can be found in central and southern Japan, the Ryukyu Islands, South Korea (Jeju Island), southeastern China, Taiwan, Hainan, and northern Vietnam. This spreading shrub or tree features narrow ovate leaves that are leathery, glossy, and dark green, measuring 3-7cm in length. Distylium hybrids are gaining popularity as a landscape plant due to their desirable characteristics. These evergreen plants are compact, resistant to disease and insects, and tolerant of heat and drought. Additionally, the isu tree has been known to reach heights of 60' in its native habitats and is highly regarded for its wood content. In fact, the wood of Distylium racemosum is used in the production of musical instruments. Some notable cultivars include 'Guppy' and the variegated 'Akebono'.

How to care for Isu Tree

Difficulty

Isu Tree is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal attention, making it an excellent choice for beginners.

Water

Isu Tree should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Isu Tree loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Isu Tree prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

Ploi does not possess verified information regarding the toxicity of this particular plant. In the event that you, a member of your family, or a pet ingests plant material with an unclear toxicity level, it is highly recommended to seek the advice of a medical professional.
