Galatella angustissima aka Galatella Angustissima
Taxonomy ID: 4580
Galatella angustissima (Tausch) Novopokr. is a herbaceous perennial in the daisy family Asteraceae, tribe Astereae. The species was first described as Aster angustissimus by Ignaz Friedrich Tausch and transferred to Galatella by Ivan Vassiljevich Novopokrovsky in 1948 (Trudy Botanicheskogo Instituta Akademii Nauk SSSR, Ser. 1, vol. 7: 136). Plants of the World Online (Kew) treats it as an accepted species with two principal synonyms: Aster angustissimus Tausch and Aster sedifolius subsp. angustissimus (Tausch) Merxm.; GBIF additionally lists Galatella hauptii (Ledeb.) Lindl. and the homonymous Galatella angustissima (Ledeb.) Vierh. as synonyms in its taxonomic backbone.
The species is native to a broad continental Eurasian range. POWO summarises the distribution as "E. Europe to Mongolia and Caucasus", with documented occurrence in Central, East and South European Russia, the North Caucasus, Kazakhstan, West Siberia, Altay, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Tuva, Mongolia and the Xinjiang region of China. POWO classifies the plant as a perennial that "grows primarily in the temperate biome", consistent with the steppe and open-grassland habitats typical of the genus.
Galatella as a whole is a small Eurasian–North African genus of around forty species, formerly included in Aster and historically also placed under the names Linosyris and Crinitaria. Members are herbaceous perennials with narrow, often resinous-dotted leaves and lavender to pinkish-lilac ray florets surrounding a yellow disc. The closely allied Galatella sedifolia — the species in whose subspecies rank Aster sedifolius angustissimus was previously placed — typically reaches 60–90 cm in height, occurs from sea level to 1,200 m, and flowers from July until late autumn; these figures provide useful context for the species-complex but are not direct measurements of G. angustissima itself.
Beyond taxonomy and distribution, accessible authoritative sources publish very little on G. angustissima. There are no entries in the major horticultural databases (RHS, Missouri Botanical Garden, Oregon State, NCSU Extension), in PFAF, in either of the Useful Plants databases (tropical or temperate), or in toxicity references such as ASPCA. The IUCN Global Invasive Species Database explicitly notes the species is not present in its archive, and no IUCN Red List, NatureServe or CABI assessment is publicly indexed. Cultivation, edibility, medicinal use, hardiness and detailed morphological data therefore cannot be stated for this species from authoritative sources at this time.
