Garrya elliptica aka Wavyleaf Silktassel
Taxonomy ID: 13410
Garrya elliptica, also known as the coast silk-tassel, silk tassel bush, or wavyleaf silktassel, is an easy to grow, evergreen shrub native to the coastal ranges of California and southern Oregon. This erect, bushy shrub can reach a height of 2-5 meters (7-16 feet) and has leathery dark green leaves. It produces long, attractive catkins or tassels from December to February, giving rise to its common name 'Silk Tassel Bush'. The male plants have the best catkins, with lengths ranging from 15 to 35 centimeters (depending on the variety and growing conditions). While G. elliptica is classified as hardy to around -10 degrees Celsius, it can still thrive in colder areas if planted in a sheltered spot away from cold winds. Varieties such as 'Evie' and 'James Roof' are commonly seen in the UK, with the latter having dark green leaves and a profusion of catkins. There are also less commonly grown varieties like G. x issaquahensis 'Pat Ballard' with slightly mauve tinged catkins and G. x issaquahensis 'Glasnevin Wine' with reddish catkins. Overall, Garrya elliptica is a beautiful shrub that adds winter interest to gardens.
