Linum grandiflorum aka Crimson Flax
Taxonomy ID: 1604
Linum grandiflorum, also known as flowering flax, red flax, scarlet flax, and crimson flax, is a species of flax native to Algeria but also found in other parts of Northern Africa, Southern Europe, and introduced in various locations in North America. This annual herb grows up to 50cm high, with an erect, branching stem and lance-shaped leaves that are waxy and grey-green in color, measuring 1 to 2 centimeters long. During summer, it produces loose clusters of small, rounded white flowers with dark red centers. Each flower consists of 5 red petals, reaching up to 3 centimeters in length, and stamens tipped with anthers bearing light blue pollen. Although it can occasionally be found outside its established range, it typically does not persist for more than one season when grown as an annual. Flowering flax is also a rare houseplant that requires regular watering and thrives best in direct light, preferably within 1 foot of a window. Additionally, it prefers well-draining soil.
