Loropetalum chinense aka Chinese Fringe Flower

Taxonomy

Loropetalum chinense, also known as loropetalum, Chinese fringe flower, and strap flower, is an evergreen plant with horizontal branches and alternately arranged, ovate leaves that have a slightly abrasive feel. There are two forms of L. chinense; a white- (to pale-yellow-) flowering green-leafed variety and a pink-flowering variety with leaves that vary from bronze-red to olive-green or burgundy, depending on selection and growing conditions. The pink-flowering variety is popular as an ornamental plant, grown for its prolific clusters of flowers and deeply colored foliage that may contain various green, copper, purple, and red tones. L. chinense grows best in fertile, slightly acidic soil in full sun for deepest foliage color and is hardy down to -15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit). Chinese Fringe Flower, a relative of L. chinense, is a relatively rare houseplant that is easy to grow and needs regular watering to thrive. It does best in long-lasting, direct light and should be less than 1 foot from a window. Chinese Fringe Flower likes soil that is well-draining. Both L. chinense and Chinese Fringe Flower are native to China, Northeastern Thailand, Japan, and Taiwan.

How to care for Chinese Fringe Flower

Difficulty

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can successfully care for Chinese Fringe Flower due to its easy-going nature.

Water

Chinese Fringe Flower should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Chinese Fringe Flower loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Chinese Fringe Flower prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.
