Mimosa pudica aka Touch Me Not

Taxonomy

Mimosa pudica, also known as the sensitive plant, sleepy plant, action plant, touch-me-not, or shameplant, is a fascinating flowering plant belonging to the pea/legume family Fabaceae. This creeping annual or perennial plant is native to Central and South America but has spread to various regions worldwide, including the Southern United States, South Asia, East Asia, Micronesia, Australia, South Africa, and West Africa. Despite its name, Mimosa pudica is not a carnivorous plant. One of the most distinctive features of Mimosa pudica is its rapid plant movement. The compound leaves of this plant fold inward and droop when touched or shaken, only to re-open a few minutes later. This unique response to touch has made Mimosa pudica a popular choice for experiments on plant habituation and memory. In addition to its intriguing behavior, Mimosa pudica is also valued for its health benefits. This spiny annual or short-lived evergreen perennial has divided leaves that are sensitive to touch and produces fluffy pale pink or pale purple flowerheads during the summer. Despite its introverted nature, Mimosa pudica has gained recognition in the UK, receiving the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Furthermore, this plant is known for its therapeutic properties. It has been used to alleviate insomnia, diabetes, and arthritis. Its association with legumes, peas, and beans is due to its classification within the Fabaceae family. Overall, Mimosa pudica is a captivating plant that captivates with its unique movements and offers potential health benefits.

How to care for Touch Me Not

Difficulty

Touch Me Not requires a bit more attention and knowledge to thrive, making it a suitable plant for those with some gardening experience.

Water

Touch Me Not should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Touch Me Not loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Touch Me Not prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

Touch Me Not is poisonous if ingested. We suggest keeping this plant out of reach if you have children, cats, or dogs in the home.

Humidity

The Touch Me Not does not necessitate supplementary humidity. Plants primarily absorb water through their roots, rather than their leaves. Hence, the most effective way to supply humidity to your plants is by watering the soil.

Fertilizer

The Touch Me Not should be transferred to a new pot once it has increased in size two-fold, or on an annual basis, whichever occurs earlier. Replacing the soil with fresh potting soil containing all the necessary nutrients, is sufficient enough to support the growth of the plant, thus avoiding the need to use fertilizer. It's important to note that plants derive their energy from the sun and not fertilizer.

Region of origin

Touch Me Not’s native range is America, Southern Africa, and India.

Flower

If you provide your Touch Me Not with adequate amounts of sunlight and water, it will bloom.
