Narcissus tazetta aka Daffodil

Taxonomy

Narcissus tazetta, also known as paperwhite, bunch-flowered narcissus, bunch-flowered daffodil, Chinese sacred lily, cream narcissus, joss flower, and polyanthus narcissus, is a perennial ornamental plant that grows from a bulb. This plant is perfect for gardens in USDA plant hardiness zones 9 through 11, as it does not require chilling to bloom well. Narcissus tazetta cultivars, including 'Paperwhite', 'Grand Soleil d'Or', and 'Ziva', are popularly used for forcing indoors, and Chinese Sacred Lily is also a form of N. tazetta. Narcissus tazetta often needs little to no care to grow well and bloom for years, but with some attention, it can put on a spectacular display for up to 100 days in early to mid-winter, depending on the weather. It is a perennial bulbous herb that can grow up to 11.2' tall and blooms in early to mid-spring. Each stem can have 3-20 fragrant, white flowers with a yellow corona, and the leaves are flat while the perianth segments are spreading.

How to care for Daffodil

Difficulty

With a bit of knowledge and dedication, you can successfully care for Daffodil, making it a rewarding choice for those seeking a moderate challenge.

Water

Daffodil should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Daffodil loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

Daffodil requires abundant, bright and direct light. Placing it less than one foot from a window is the best way to make sure the plant receives enough light to survive and thrive. Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold. With some care and attention, your Daffodil will be sure to bring you many years of beauty and enjoyment.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it is common for Daffodil plants to go dormant and their growth rate may slow down. Therefore, the amount of waterings should be spaced out more.

Toxicity

Daffodil is poisonous if ingested. We suggest keeping this plant out of reach if you have children, cats, or dogs in the home.

Region of origin

Daffodil’s native range is Europe to E. Asia.
