Opuntia tomentosa aka Velvet Opuntia

Taxonomy

Opuntia tomentosa, also known as woollyjoint pricklypear or velvety tree pear, is a species of Opuntia that is endemic to Mexico. It can be found in various regions including the Mexico Federal District and the states of Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, México State, Michoacán, Morelos, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, and Veracruz, and possibly Jalisco. It is also adventive in Australia, South Africa, and other areas where it is considered a minor rangeland pest. This plant typically grows between 1,090 and 2,600 meters above sea level and thrives in sub-tropical, semi-arid, and warmer temperate environments. In Mexico, it can be found in Quercus forests, xerophyllous scrub, and grasslands in volcanic areas with shallow soils. It can tolerate disturbance and a semi-arid climate modified by altitude, but water availability is limited due to low water retention from shallow accumulated soil and a great percolation caused by the rock structure. Daily temperature fluctuations can be as wide as ~34°C. As a houseplant, Woolyjoint Prickly Pear is relatively rare and requires very little water to thrive. It prefers long-lasting direct light and should be positioned less than one foot from a window. Soil that is extremely well-draining is best, and the plant should not need added fertilizers if repotted each time it doubles in size.

How to care for Velvet Opuntia

Difficulty

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can successfully care for Velvet Opuntia due to its easy-going nature.

Water

Velvet Opuntia does best in dry soil and should only be watered sparingly.

Soil

When growing the Velvet Opuntia, it's important to use a potting soil that is well-draining and does not retain excessive moisture. An optimal soil mix should contain a high proportion of perlite or vermiculite for good drainage and some organic matter for nourishment. Simply add a few scoops of perlite to regular cactus soil to achieve this.

Lighting

Velvet Opuntia thrives in bright and direct sunlight. To ensure your plant receives enough light to survive, place it less than one foot from a window. The current weather in your area may affect the placement in your home. For example, if you live in a region that has longer and more intense periods of sunlight, then you may want to place the plant farther away from the window to avoid direct sunlight and reduce the risk of sunburn. Alternatively, if you live in a region with relatively milder temperatures and less intense sunlight, then you may be able to place the plant closer to the window for increased exposure. Ultimately, the current weather in your area should be taken into consideration when determining the best placement for your Woollyjoint Pricklypear.

Dormancy

During the wintertime, it's common for Velvet Opuntia to go dormant and their growth may slow down, so waterings should be spaced out more.

Toxicity

Ploi lacks confirmed information on the toxicity of this plant. If you, a relative, or your pet accidentally consume plant material with unknown toxicity, it's best to consult a medical expert.

Humidity

Velvet Opuntia plants thrive in dry environments, however, if you choose to provide extra humidity or mist your plant, the lingering water on the leaves can create an ideal environment for certain types of harmful fungi.

Fertilizer

The Velvet Opuntia grows at a slow pace and doesn't require any supplementary fertilizers. By renewing its potting soil once a year, it should receive enough nourishment. Remember, plants obtain their energy from sunlight, not fertilizers.

Region of origin

Velvet Opuntia’s native range is the Americas.
