Peperomia perciliata aka Peperomia Perciliata

Taxonomy

Peperomia perciliata is a species of plant in the genus Peperomia and is native to Colombia. These tropical perennials are grown for their ornamental foliage and belong to the pepper family, along with black peppercorns. Despite varying in appearance, they generally have thick, stout stems and fleshy leaves, sometimes with epidermal windows. Peperomia flowers come in yellow to brown conical spikes and are unnoticeable. The plants are compact and usually do not exceed 12 inches (30 cm) in height. The leaves are smooth and fleshy and may be oval, heart-shaped, or lance-shaped, with sizes ranging from 1–4 inches (2.5–10.2 cm) long. They may be green or striped, marbled or bordered with pale green, red, or gray, and the petioles of some kinds are red. The fruit is a berry that eventually dries out and shows the pepper-like seed. Peperomia plants can be easily propagated by leaves, making them super easy to share with friends! Furthermore, their fruits and seeds have traveled one of the longest distances ever recorded, over 3000 miles to an island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, while stuck to a bird's feet.

How to care for Peperomia Perciliata

Difficulty

With a bit of knowledge and dedication, you can successfully care for Peperomia Perciliata, making it a rewarding choice for those seeking a moderate challenge.

Water

Peperomia Perciliata should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Peperomia Perciliata loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Peperomia Perciliata prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

No verified data on the toxicity of this plant exists within Ploi's records. Should you, someone in your family, or your pet ingest plant material with an unknown toxicity level, it is recommended to seek medical advice.

Humidity

The Peperomia Perciliata does not demand additional humidity levels. Water is mostly absorbed by the roots of plants, rather than their leaves, and the best way to provide humidity to your plants is through watering the soil.

Fertilizer

Once the Peperomia Perciliata has doubled in size or after a year has passed, it should be moved to a new pot. By replacing the soil with fresh potting soil containing all the vital nutrients, your plant will receive all the sustenance it needs, negating the requirement for fertilizer. It's important to remember that plants get their energy from the sun, not fertilizer.

Region of origin

Peperomia Perciliata’s native range is Worldwide.
