Ranunculus flammula aka Lesser Spearwort

Taxonomy

Ranunculus flammula, also known as the lesser spearwort, greater creeping spearwort, or banewort, is a poisonous species of perennial herbaceous plants. It can be found growing in damp places throughout the Boreal Kingdom and blooms in June and July. This plant is closely related to R. reptans, which is distinguished by its prostrate and slender stems, narrower leaves, and smaller flowers. Sometimes, R. reptans is included as a variety within R. flammula. Ranunculus flammula is adapted to rain-pollination and is a marginal, aquatic perennial reaching a height of approximately 90cm. It has upright, green spear-shaped leaves tinged with red, measuring 1-2.5 cm in length. During early summer, it produces bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers that are 2cm across. On the other hand, Flame Buttercup is a rare houseplant native to the United States and Canada. It belongs to the Ranunculus genus and requires regular watering to thrive. This plant prefers long-lasting, direct light and should be placed less than 1 foot away from a window. It thrives in soil that retains moisture well and doesn't require additional fertilizers if repotted each time it doubles in size.

How to care for Lesser Spearwort

Water

Lesser Spearwort should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Lesser Spearwort is very sensitive to dry soil. To ensure your Greater Creeping Spearwort is thriving and blooming, choose a potting soil that retains moisture. A good soil should still allow for adequate drainage and contain lots of organic matter. Coco coir or sphagnum moss are great soil additives that will help to retain moisture and provide your Spearwort with the nutrients it needs for healthy growth. Make sure to mix these soil additives into the potting soil before planting and water the soil thoroughly. By providing your Lesser Spearwort with a well-draining, moisture-retaining soil, you can help to maximize its growth and keep it blooming.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Lesser Spearwort prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

Lesser Spearwort is poisonous if ingested. We suggest keeping this plant out of reach if you have children, cats, or dogs in the home.

Fertilizer

The Lesser Spearwort should be repotted when it has doubled in size or annually, whichever comes first. Providing fresh potting soil with all the essential nutrients each year ensures the plant's well-being, eliminating the need for fertilizer. Remember, plants derive their energy from the sun and not fertilizer.

Growth-pattern

Lesser Spearwort grows vertically and new growth emerges from the top of the plant.

Region of origin

Lesser Spearwort’s native range is Most of Europe, including Britain, to temperate Asia.
