Sansevieria zeylanica aka Ceylon Bowstring Hemp

Taxonomy

Sansevieria zeylanica, also known as Dracaena zeylanica or bowstring hemp, is an evergreen perennial plant native to southern India and Sri Lanka. It is a relative of the "mother in law's tongue" and is commonly found as a houseplant. This upright perennial can grow up to 80cm and forms a clump of stiff, fleshy, sword-shaped leaves. The leaves have irregular bands of dark and pale green, with creamy wave-like stripes across the surface. Although it is technically a flowering plant, Sansevieria zeylanica rarely blooms, but when it does, it produces greenish-white, fragrant flowers. It is grown in tropical countries for its medicinal and fiber qualities, with the rhizomatic roots used to make antiseptic ointments and the fibers in the leaves used for making cloth, mats, paper pulp, and sails. However, it is important to note that Sansevieria zeylanica is mildly toxic when eaten.
