Solidago aka Goldenrod

Taxonomy

Solidago, commonly known as goldenrods, is a genus of 100 to 120 species of flowering plants in the Asteraceae family. These herbaceous perennials can be found in open areas like meadows, prairies, and savannas. Most of the species are native to North America, including Mexico, while some can also be found in South America and Eurasia. A few American species have been introduced to Europe and other parts of the world. These plants typically grow to about 80cm tall and have woody-based, herbaceous perennial stems that form compact clumps. The leaves are slender and alternate along the stems. In late summer, Solidago produces clusters of small, yellow flowers, which are attractive to pollinating insects and can also be cut for arrangements. One specific species, Solidago canadensis, also known as Canadian goldenrod, is a rhizomatous perennial that belongs to the sunflower family. It thrives in moist conditions and is commonly found in abandoned farmlands, pastures, fields, thickets, prairies, waste areas, and along roadsides. The central stems of Solidago canadensis are covered with narrow, lance-shaped, toothed leaves that are green and hairless above but hairy beneath. These stems can reach heights of 4-5' (occasionally up to 7') and are topped with large pyramidal panicles of tiny yellow flowers, which bloom from late summer to fall (August to October).

How to care for Goldenrod

Difficulty

Goldenrod is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal attention, making it an excellent choice for beginners.

Lighting

Goldenrod requires abundant, bright and direct light. Placing it less than one foot from a window is the best way to make sure the plant receives enough light to survive and thrive. Depending on your region, however, the current weather can affect the placement of the plant in your home. For example, in some areas the sun may be too direct and intense, so it's best to place it farther away from the window. You may also need to adjust your placement according to the season as the sunlight can change intensity over the course of the year. If you live in a region with significant temperature fluctuations, such as a desert, you may need to place the plant a bit farther away from the window to avoid extreme heat or cold. With some care and attention, your Goldenrod will be sure to bring you many years of beauty and enjoyment.
