Trillium luteum aka Yellow Wakerobin

Taxonomy

Trillium luteum, also known as the yellow trillium or yellow wakerobin, is a rare flowering plant belonging to the Melanthiaceae family. This perennial species, part of the Trillium cuneatum complex, is endemic to the southeastern United States, particularly the Great Smoky Mountains region of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. Growing up to 45cm tall, it features whorled, broadly ovate leaves with attractive silvery green mottling. The plant produces solitary terminal flowers that are yellowish green in color, with narrow, upright petals reaching up to 9cm in length. As a houseplant, the yellow wake robin, or Trillium luteum, is relatively easy to cultivate, requiring regular watering and abundant sunlight. It thrives best when placed within 3 feet of a window. It prefers well-draining soil and does not typically require additional fertilizers if repotted each time it doubles in size. Native to the Southeastern United States, this plant belongs to the Trillium genus.

How to care for Yellow Wakerobin

Difficulty

Caring for Yellow Wakerobin is a breeze, as it is highly adaptable and forgiving to minor neglect.

Water

Yellow Wakerobin should be watered regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Soil

Yellow Wakerobin loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Yellow Wakerobin prefers bright indirect light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

Yellow Wakerobin is poisonous if ingested. We suggest keeping this plant out of reach if you have children, cats, or dogs in the home.

Fertilizer

The Yellow Wakerobin grows at a slow pace and doesn't require any supplementary fertilizers. By renewing its potting soil once a year, it should receive enough nourishment. Remember, plants obtain their energy from sunlight, not fertilizers.

Growth-pattern

New growth will sprout from the top of the Yellow Wakerobin as it grows vertically.
