Zephyranthes aka Zephyrlily

Taxonomy

Zephyranthes is a genus of plants in the Amaryllis family, known for their star-shaped blooms and grasslike foliage. They are native to the Western Hemisphere, but widely cultivated as ornamentals. The genus includes over 200 recognized species, as well as hybrids and cultivars, with common names such as fairy lily, rainflower, zephyr lily, magic lily, Atamasco lily, and rain lily. The name is derived from the Greek god of the west wind, Zephyrus, and the word for flower, anthos. One popular species of Zephyranthes is Zephyranthes candida, also known as the zephyr flower or rain lily. These plants bloom after a rain and can be planted in the ground in Sunset's Climate Zones 4 through 32. Plant bulbs in early spring, 2 to 3 inches deep and 3 to 4 inches apart. The plant's foliage grows to 6 inches to 1 foot tall and produces pink-tinged, white blooms in late summer to early fall. In warmer regions, it can be used as an evergreen ground cover and requires little regular care once established. Another rare species is Zephyranthes puertoricensis, which makes a great houseplant. It prefers long-lasting, direct light and well-draining soil. Repot every time it doubles in size, and it shouldn't need added fertilizers.

How to care for Zephyrlily

Difficulty

Zephyrlily is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal attention, making it an excellent choice for beginners.

Soil

Zephyrlily loves a well-draining soil. Perlite and vermiculite help with drainage, while coco coir adds organic matter, so a good potting soil mix will have all three. You can improve store-bought soil by adding some perlite to it.

Lighting

To ensure optimal growth, the Zephyrlily prefers bright diffused light for 6-8 hours each day. Insufficient light can result in slow growth and leaf drop, so it's important to find a well-lit location for this plant. Place it near a window, within a distance of 1 meter (3 feet), to enhance its potential for thriving.

Toxicity

Ploi's records do not contain confirmed information on the toxicity of this particular plant. In the event of accidental ingestion of plant material with questionable toxicity by you, a family member, or a pet, it is always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.

Fertilizer

The growth of Zephyrlily is not rapid and it doesn't necessitate any extra fertilization. By replacing its potting soil once a year, it should receive ample nutrition. It is important to note that plants obtain their energy from the sun's rays, not from fertilizers.
