Adinandra is a genus of flowering plants in the family Pentaphylacaceae, placed within the order Ericales. The genus was described by the Scottish botanist William Jack in 1822, based on material from the Malay Archipelago, and published in his Malayan Miscellanies. Pentaphylacaceae — a small family that subsumed the former Ternstroemiaceae under the APG III classification of 2009 — currently contains about 12 genera, with Adinandra being one of its more species-rich members.

The genus encompasses approximately 35–139 accepted species (estimates vary by checklist), all of which are trees or shrubs native to tropical and subtropical Asia. The core of its diversity lies in China, the Malay Archipelago (Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei), Taiwan, and the Philippines, with outlying occurrences in Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, and adjacent countries. The geographic pattern of GBIF occurrence records points firmly to the Asia-Pacific region as the center of distribution.

Notable species within the genus include Adinandra dumosa, Adinandra millettii, Adinandra integerrima, and Adinandra collina, among others. Adinandra integerrima is one of the more widely documented members, photographed from Vietnam to Taiwan.

Distribution

Adinandra is native to tropical and subtropical Asia. Occurrence records are concentrated in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and the Philippines, with significant populations also in Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Brunei, and adjacent countries. The genus was first described from the Malay Archipelago.

Taxonomy Notes

Adinandra Jack (1822) belongs to the family Pentaphylacaceae, order Ericales. Pentaphylacaceae was expanded under APG III (2009) to include the former family Ternstroemiaceae; Adinandra was historically placed in Ternstroemiaceae before that circumscription change. The GBIF backbone lists the type publication as Jack (1822) Malay Misc. 2: N. 7. P. 49.
