Asteranthera is a monotypic plant genus in the family Gesneriaceae (order Lamiales), comprising a single species, Asteranthera ovata. It is native to the humid temperate rainforests of southern Chile and adjacent Argentina, where it grows as an evergreen scrambling vine or ground cover across the forest floor and up tree trunks.

The plant is characterized by small, rounded leaves with scalloped (crenate) margins. Its flowers are tubular and distinctly two-lipped, vivid red with white markings inside — a typical Gesneriaceae floral form adapted for pollination. Flowering occurs in summer. In cultivation it is grown both as a climbing plant and as ground cover, valued for its attractive foliage and striking flowers.

Asteranthera is one of a handful of Gesneriaceae genera native to the cool temperate Southern Hemisphere, an unusual distribution within a family concentrated largely in the tropics and subtropics.

Distribution

Asteranthera is native to the humid temperate forests of southern Chile and Argentina. It is one of very few Gesneriaceae genera found in cool-temperate South America rather than the tropics.

Ecology

Asteranthera ovata inhabits humid temperate rainforest, growing as an evergreen scrambling vine over the forest floor and up tree trunks and shrubs in its native range.

Cultivation

Asteranthera ovata can be grown as a climber on supports or allowed to spread as a ground cover. It blooms in summer, producing its distinctive red tubular flowers. Its preference for cool, humid conditions reflects its temperate rainforest origin.
