Barnardia is a small genus of bulbous flowering plants belonging to the family Asparagaceae (subfamily Scilloideae), sometimes treated under the family Hyacinthaceae, within the order Asparagales. The genus comprises just two species with a curiously disjunct distribution: Barnardia japonica occurs across eastern Asia — China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the Russian Far East near Vladivostok — while Barnardia numidica grows in the Balearic Islands and north-west Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya).

Plants in Barnardia grow from bulbs and bloom in autumn, producing dense racemes of small, star-shaped flowers with pink tepals (white forms occur rarely) and narrow bracts. The stamens are notably widened at the base, and the elongated seeds are dark brown. The disjunct distribution of the two species prompted Ali et al. (2012) to suggest they may not be closely related, and that B. numidica might warrant placement in a distinct genus.

Barnardia japonica is the better-known species in cultivation, grown as an ornamental bulb in temperate gardens — often under the synonym Scilla scilloides — where it flowers reliably in a sunny position in autumn.

Distribution

Barnardia has a strikingly disjunct range: B. japonica is native to eastern China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the Russian coast near Vladivostok, while B. numidica occurs in the Balearic Islands and north-west Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, Libya). The two species' lack of geographic continuity contributed to the 2012 suggestion that they may not be sister taxa.

Taxonomy Notes

Barnardia sits in family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae (order Asparagales); the subfamily is alternatively elevated to family rank as Hyacinthaceae. Ali et al. (2012) proposed that the genus's two species are not closely related and that B. numidica should be segregated into its own genus, though this transfer had not been formally adopted as of May 2026 per the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families.

Cultivation

Barnardia japonica is grown as an ornamental bulb in temperate gardens, frequently sold under the synonym Scilla scilloides. It performs best in a sunny position and flowers in autumn. Both the typical pink-flowered form and a white-flowered form are available in cultivation.
