Bellium is a small genus of flowering plants in the daisy family, Asteraceae, placed in the order Asterales. The genus contains around five species of low-growing, mat-forming herbs closely resembling Bellis (the common daisy), which is reflected in both the genus name and the informal name "false daisy" sometimes applied to its members. Plants produce slender stems bearing small, solitary flower heads with white or pale ray florets surrounding a yellow disc, characteristic of the broader daisy tribe.

The genus is endemic to the western and central Mediterranean basin, with species occurring on islands and coastal areas including the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Malta, Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus. Several species are restricted to single islands or island groups, giving the genus a notably high degree of endemism for its size. Bellium bellidioides is the most widespread species, recorded from the Balearic Islands, Corsica, and Sardinia, while Bellium minutum occupies the eastern Mediterranean range (Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Malta, Sicily). Bellium crassifolium and Bellium artrutxense are Sardinian and Balearic endemics respectively.

Etymology

The name Bellium derives from its close resemblance to Bellis, the genus of common daisies, itself from the Latin bellus meaning "pretty" or "beautiful." The epithet reflects the genus's daisy-like flower heads.

Distribution

Bellium is native to the Mediterranean region, with species distributed across islands and coastal areas: the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Malta, Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus. The genus shows high island endemism, with individual species often restricted to a single island or island group.

Taxonomy Notes

Bellium belongs to the family Asteraceae (order Asterales) and is closely allied to Bellis, sharing the characteristic solitary daisy-like capitula. GBIF recognises 5 accepted descendants. The genus has historically been treated as part of the tribe Astereae within Asteraceae.
