Boucerosia is a genus of succulent flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae (order Gentianales). It belongs to the stapeliad group within the subfamily Asclepiadoideae, a complex of stem-succulent plants known for their often foul-scented, star-shaped flowers that attract fly pollinators through deceptive carrion-mimicry. The genus is native to South Asia, with its range spanning Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka, where it grows in tropical and subtropical arid to semi-arid habitats. Species of Boucerosia are perennial succulents with fleshy, often four-angled or multi-angled stems that are typically leafless, photosynthesizing through their green stems. They produce small, five-petaled flowers arranged in umbellate clusters, with corollas that are often intricate in color and texture, ranging from deep maroon to yellowish-green with dark markings. The most well-known species is Boucerosia umbellata, noted for its umbrella-like inflorescences of dark purple flowers. Other notable members include B. frerei (formerly classified as Frerea indica, remarkable for having persistent leaves — an unusual trait among stapeliads), B. crenulata, B. diffusa (which ranges into the Eastern Ghats), B. indica, B. pauciflora, B. penduliflora, and B. procumbens. The genus has a complex taxonomic history and is closely related to Caralluma, with several Boucerosia species having been classified under that genus in earlier treatments and then reinstated. Like other stapeliads, these plants have adapted to survive prolonged dry periods by storing water in their succulent stems, and they are valued by succulent collectors and botanical gardens for their unusual floral morphology and manageable size.

Distribution

Boucerosia is native to South Asia, with its range encompassing Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. The genus occurs in tropical and subtropical regions, typically in arid to semi-arid habitats characteristic of the stapeliad succulents.

Taxonomy

Boucerosia is placed in the family Apocynaceae, subfamily Asclepiadoideae, within the stapeliad complex of stem succulents. The genus is closely related to Caralluma, and several Boucerosia species were formerly treated under Caralluma. Notably, Boucerosia frerei was previously known as Frerea indica before its transfer to Boucerosia. The genus was described by Wight & Arnott, as reflected in the authorities of its species (e.g., Boucerosia umbellata (Haw.) Wight & Arn.). GBIF treats Boucerosia as an accepted genus with limited descendant coverage (1 species recorded).
