Calymmodon Genus

Calymmodon is a genus of ferns in the family Polypodiaceae, placed in subfamily Grammitidoideae under the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 (PPG I). The genus was described by the Czech botanist Karel Bořivoj Presl in 1836 (Tentamen Pteridographiae, p. 203).

The genus is native to parts of tropical Asia and the Pacific, with a known range spanning Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malesia, Australia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

Species counts vary slightly by source: the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy recognizes 60 accepted species, while the Checklist of Ferns and Lycophytes of the World, as consulted in October 2025, accepted sixty-four species in the genus. One of these, Calymmodon cucullatus, is illustrated as the representative species for the genus on Wikipedia.

Distribution

Calymmodon occurs across Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malesia, Australia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

Taxonomy Notes

The genus was described by C. Presl in 1836 and is classified in family Polypodiaceae, subfamily Grammitidoideae, under the PPG I (2016) fern classification. Accepted species counts differ between sources: GBIF's Backbone Taxonomy lists 60 species, while the Checklist of Ferns and Lycophytes of the World (as of October 2025) accepted 64.
