Calyptrocalyx is a genus of palms (family Arecaceae, order Arecales) first described by Carl Ludwig Blume in 1843 (Rumphia 2: 103). The genus is native to New Guinea and the nearby Maluku Islands, growing as an understorey component of rainforest from sea level to about 1000 m, often on mountain slopes and occasionally alongside streams and in swamps. All species occur in New Guinea except Calyptrocalyx spicatus, which is found in the Maluku Islands instead.
Species range from small, clustering palms to solitary trees, with trunks conspicuously ringed by leaf scars; trunk diameters span roughly 1 cm (C. arfakiensis) to 25 cm (C. spicatus), with heights from about 1 to 12 m. Leaves may be pinnate, bifid, or undivided, with petioles channeled on the upper surface and rounded beneath. New foliage often emerges in vivid purple, red, or orange tones before maturing to green, a trait that has made the genus increasingly popular in cultivation. The inflorescence is typically an unbranched, interfoliar spike bearing unisexual flowers of both sexes, each with three sepals and three petals; the fruit is usually orange or red and single-seeded.
Taxonomically, Plants of the World Online recognized 28 species in the genus as of February 2025, while GBIF's backbone taxonomy lists 34 accepted descendant taxa; palms formerly classified in the genus Paralinospadix have since been incorporated into Calyptrocalyx.
Because of their brightly colored emergent leaves, Calyptrocalyx palms are grown as ornamentals in tropical and subtropical horticulture, though they are frost-tender and are best given well-drained, humus-rich soil and shade or filtered light, particularly while young.
Etymology
The genus name derives from two Greek words meaning "covered" and "calyx".
Distribution
Calyptrocalyx is native to New Guinea and the nearby Maluku Islands. Nearly all species are confined to New Guinea, with the exception of Calyptrocalyx spicatus, which grows in the Maluku Islands.

Cultivation
