Carpoxylon is a monotypic genus of palm in the family Arecaceae (order Arecales), containing the single species Carpoxylon macrospermum. It is endemic to the island nation of Vanuatu in the South Pacific, where it grows in lowland rainforest near streams on the island of Espiritu Santo.

This is a tall, graceful, emergent palm with a solitary trunk reaching up to 18 metres in height. The trunk has a swollen base (to 50 cm diameter) that narrows to a uniform 35 cm above one metre, with smooth dull green internodes that turn grey with age. The crownshaft is large and columnar (1.5–2.0 m), shiny uniform green, and splits opposite the petiole before leaf fall. The pinnate leaves are large (3.5–4.0 m long), strongly arcuate toward the apex, with numerous stiffly coriaceous linear pinnae arranged along a flexible rachis. The infructescences are large and spreading, held directly below the crownshaft, with 4–6 developing in progressive stages on twice-branched stalks.

Fruits are large, ovoid-ellipsoidal, and turn bright orange at maturity. Each contains a single large, oblong-ovoid seed with a thin fibrous mesocarp. The genus name derives from Greek karpos (fruit) and xylon (wood), referencing these notably large, woody fruits. Carpoxylon macrospermum was first described scientifically by Hermann Wendland and Carl Georg Oscar Drude in 1875 in the journal Linnaea. It was not recorded in the field in modern times until 1987, when John Dowe located a small population on Espiritu Santo. It is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and its extremely small known population.

Etymology

The genus name Carpoxylon is derived from the Greek karpos (καρπός, "fruit") and xylon (ξύλον, "wood"), referencing the palm's notably large, woody fruits. The specific epithet macrospermum means "large-seeded," from Greek makros (μακρός, "large") + sperma (σπέρμα, "seed"). The species was first described by Hermann Wendland and Carl Georg Oscar Drude in 1875 in the journal Linnaea.

Distribution

Carpoxylon macrospermum is endemic to the Republic of Vanuatu in the South Pacific. The only confirmed wild population is on the island of Espiritu Santo, where it grows in lowland forest near streams. At the time of the first modern field survey in 1987, only four specimens were found in a single close group, though local villagers reported scattered individuals occurring further upstream. GBIF records no established occurrences outside Vanuatu.

Ecology

Carpoxylon grows as an emergent palm in lowland rainforest near streams on Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. Seed dispersal appears to be facilitated by coconut crabs (Birgus latro), with seedlings observed emerging from crab burrows in the vicinity beneath parent palms. The palm produces large infructescences with 4–6 staged clusters of fruits that ripen progressively to bright orange. Little is known about pollination, as inflorescences had not been collected at the time of the first detailed field survey.

Conservation

Carpoxylon macrospermum is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, with the primary threat being habitat loss. The palm was known only from historical herbarium specimens until November 1987, when John Dowe located a small population on Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. Only four specimens were found in a single close group: three had reached reproductive age, one was a large adolescent, and a number of scattered seedlings were present beneath them. Local reports of additional individuals further upstream suggest the total population may be somewhat larger, but the species remains extremely rare in the wild. A 1997 genetic and ecological study (Dowe et al., Biological Conservation) investigated the population structure and genetic diversity of this endangered palm.

Cultivation

Carpoxylon macrospermum is cultivated by palm enthusiasts and botanical gardens outside its native range, though it remains rare in horticulture. Young plants have been observed growing strongly in cultivation. The palm requires tropical conditions, consistent with its lowland rainforest origin. It is a tall, emergent species suited to spacious tropical landscapes. Its graceful crownshaft and arcuate leaves make it an attractive ornamental palm for collectors, though its Critically Endangered status and rarity in the wild make ex-situ cultivation important for conservation.
