Chlorospatha is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae (order Alismatales), comprising approximately 69 accepted species. It is native to the Neotropics, with a range extending from Costa Rica and Panama through Colombia and Ecuador to Peru. The genus is characterised by bullate foliage — leaves with a distinctive blistered or puckered surface texture — and is one of the less commonly encountered aroid genera in the Neotropical flora.
Chlorospatha species are typically found growing in shaded bogs, where they occupy persistently moist, low-light microhabitats. These conditions make the plants notoriously difficult to cultivate outside their native environment, and they are rarely seen in horticultural collections. The genus includes several regionally restricted species, particularly in the Antioquia region of Colombia where many taxa have been described. One species, Chlorospatha kressii from the Chocó region of Colombia, is currently believed to be extinct — a loss possibly driven by habitat destruction in its narrow range.
Distribution
Chlorospatha is a Neotropical genus found from Costa Rica and Panama southward through Colombia and Ecuador to Peru. Species are concentrated in the Andean regions of Colombia and Ecuador, with several taxa endemic to Antioquia department in Colombia.
Ecology
Chlorospatha species are plants of shaded bogs, growing in persistently moist environments under low light. These wetland microhabitats, often in montane or premontane forests, provide the constant humidity the genus requires.
Cultivation
Chlorospatha species are notoriously difficult to cultivate in horticultural settings, likely due to their exacting requirements for consistent high humidity, shaded conditions, and permanently moist substrates that replicate their native bog habitats.
Conservation
One species, Chlorospatha kressii from the Chocó region of Colombia, is currently believed to be extinct. Several other species in the genus have narrow geographic ranges, particularly those endemic to the Antioquia region of Colombia, making them potentially vulnerable to habitat loss.
