Coldenia Genus

Coldenia is a small genus of flowering plants first described by Linnaeus in 1753. It is currently treated as monotypic — the only genus in its own family, Coldeniaceae — with a single widely accepted species, Coldenia procumbens, a low, prostrate herb. The genus's taxonomic home has shifted more than once: it was traditionally folded into the borage family, Boraginaceae sensu lato, within the subfamily Ehretioideae, but molecular studies later revealed it to be more closely allied with the genus Cordia, prompting some botanists to reassign it to Cordioideae instead. The Boraginales Working Group ultimately elevated it to its own family, Coldeniaceae, within the broader order Boraginales. That placement is not universally settled: World Flora Online accepts Coldeniaceae as a distinct family, while Plants of the World Online instead keeps Coldenia nested within a broadly defined Boraginaceae. GBIF's backbone taxonomy follows the Coldeniaceae/Boraginales placement and lists nine backbone names under the genus, though only a couple carry fully accepted status.

Distributional records compiled by the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (via GBIF) show a broad, pantropical footprint for the genus, spanning sub-Saharan and North Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and northern Australia — consistent with Coldenia procumbens's reputation as a widespread weedy species of open, disturbed, often sandy or seasonally wet ground across the tropics and subtropics of the Old World. The genus name commemorates Cadwallader Colden, an 18th-century physician, scientist and colonial official with botanical interests. Within the wider Boraginales, Coldenia sits as a taxonomically small but geographically far-reaching lineage, most often encountered by botanists and gardeners as an incidental, low-growing herbaceous plant of tropical wastelands rather than as a cultivated ornamental.
