Culcasia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae (order Alismatales), first described by the French botanist Ambroise Marie François Joseph Palisot de Beauvois in his Flore d'Oware et de Bénin en Afrique (1805). The genus is native to tropical Africa, with recorded occurrences spanning roughly 32 botanical regions from Senegal, Guinea-Bissau and Mali in the west, across the Central African rainforest block (Cameroon, Gabon, the Congo Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Central African Republic), to Ethiopia and Sudan in the northeast, and south to Angola, Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
Most Culcasia species are climbing plants (lianas), and their appearance closely resembles the related aroid genus Cercestis, from which they are distinguished by the absence of flagella (whip-like trailing shoots). GBIF's taxonomic backbone records 31 descendant taxa within the genus, including the eight species held here: Culcasia mannii, C. obliquifolia, C. annetii, C. linearifolia, C. brevipetiolata, C. yangambiensis, C. orientalis, and C. dinklagei, whose individual ranges collectively trace the genus's wide West-to-East African distribution — from Liberia and Ivory Coast through Cameroon, Gabon and the Congos to Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia.
As with other climbing aroids, Culcasia species are generally understood to grow in humid tropical forest habitats across their African range, though detailed ecological accounts are not covered in the sources consulted here.
