Cyphophoenix is a small genus of palms in the family Arecaceae, order Arecales, comprising four known species. The genus is entirely endemic to New Caledonia, the island territory in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, making it one of several palm genera restricted to that botanically diverse archipelago.

Within Arecaceae, Cyphophoenix is placed in the tribe Basseliniinae, a group of palms largely concentrated in the Pacific region. Its closest relatives within the tribe include Physokentia and Burretiokentia, the latter also endemic to New Caledonia, though the precise relationships among these genera remain incompletely resolved.

The four accepted species are Cyphophoenix alba, Cyphophoenix elegans, Cyphophoenix fulcita, and Cyphophoenix nucele. The genus thus represents a notable element of New Caledonia's exceptionally high plant endemism, a flora shaped by the island's long isolation and distinctive ultramafic (nickel-rich) soils.

Distribution

All four species of Cyphophoenix are endemic to New Caledonia, an island territory in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The genus does not occur naturally outside this archipelago.

Taxonomy Notes

Cyphophoenix belongs to the tribe Basseliniinae within Arecaceae. Its relationships to related genera in the tribe — including Physokentia and the New Caledonian endemic Burretiokentia — are not fully resolved.
