Cyrtandra Genus

Cyrtandra is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Gesneriaceae, within the order Lamiales. Described by Johann Reinhold Forster and Georg Forster in 1775, it is the largest genus in Gesneriaceae, containing roughly 600 recognized species, with new species still being described regularly.

The genus is native to Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, with its center of diversity in Southeast Asia and the Malesian region. Nearly all species grow in rainforest habitats, and Cyrtandra is often cited as an example of a "supertramp genus" — a group of highly effective colonizers of island and disturbed habitats.

Growth forms within the genus are diverse, ranging from small herbs and vines to shrubs, epiphytes, and trees. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of two stamens with a distinctively curved shape — the source of the genus name, derived from the Greek words for "curved" (kyrtós) and "male" (anḗr). Most species bear white flowers, though a minority have red, orange, yellow, or pink blooms.

Species identification within Cyrtandra is notoriously difficult: the plants are highly polymorphic and readily hybridize with one another, blurring boundaries between taxa. While the genus as a whole is common across its range, many individual species are narrowly endemic, localized, and threatened — a pattern especially pronounced among the Hawaiian species, where the group is known collectively as haʻiwale.

Etymology

The name Cyrtandra is Neo-Latin, built from the Greek κυρτός (kyrtós, "curved") and ἀνήρ (anḗr, "male"), referring to the genus's characteristically curved stamens.
