Deckenia is a genus of palm (family Arecaceae, order Arecales) that is monotypic, containing the single species Deckenia nobilis, commonly known as the cabbage palm or millionaire's salad. The genus was published in the Gardeners' Chronicle in 1870 (Deckenia H.Wendl. ex Seem.), and GBIF's taxonomic backbone lists exactly one accepted descendant species, confirming its monotypic status.
Deckenia nobilis is endemic to the Seychelles, where it grows intermittently in lowland forest at elevations up to 600 metres. Mature individuals can reach roughly 40 metres in height. Young specimens are notable for the yellow spines that develop along their trunks, and the palm produces a distinctively spiny fruit.
The species is under pressure from unregulated and illegal harvesting of its edible palm heart — the source of the common name "millionaire's salad" — which has driven population decline. Some stands persist on rocky crags and outcrops that are difficult for people to reach, offering them a degree of natural protection, and Seychelles tree nurseries propagate seedlings for replanting to support the population.
