Dendrophylax is a genus of leafless epiphytic orchids (family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales) native to Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and Florida. GBIF's backbone taxonomy places the genus, authored by Reichenbach fil. and published in 1864, within class Liliopsida; Plants of the World Online recognizes 15 accepted species as of March 2026.
The genus's defining trait is its near-total absence of leaves and stem. Plants consist of masses of flat, cord-like, green roots anchored directly to tree bark, with the stem reduced to almost nothing and the leaves reduced to small scales. Photosynthesis happens in the roots themselves, which carry distinctive white "track marks" called pneumatodes — structures that function much like stomata, allowing the roots to exchange gases in support of photosynthesis.
Molecular studies suggest Dendrophylax's leafless habit has a striking biogeographic origin: the genus is a distant relative of the African and Indian Ocean genus Angraecum, and the ancestral lineage appears to have crossed the Atlantic as wind-blown seed before establishing in the Caribbean. The leafless growth form seems to have evolved in parallel on both sides of the Atlantic within the orchid subtribe Angraecineae (tribe Vandeae), a group that also includes the related genus Harriselia.
Flowers across the genus tend to be large, white, strongly and fruitily fragrant (often compared to apple), and fitted with unusually long nectar spurs — typically 4 to 8 inches — that reflect a close pollination relationship with long-tongued hawkmoths, including the giant sphinx moth. The best-known member is Dendrophylax lindenii, the Florida Ghost Orchid, which drew wide public attention through the book The Orchid Thief. Species vary considerably in how amenable they are to cultivation: Dendrophylax funalis is comparatively easy and grows into large, robust plants both in the wild and under cultivation, while D. lindenii and several other species are notoriously difficult, and a few small-flowered species attract little interest from growers at all.

The genus name derives from Greek δένδρον (dendron, "tree") and φύλαξ (phylax, "guard; keeper").
