Dictyosphaeria is a genus of tropical green algae (class Ulvophyceae) in the family Siphonocladaceae. Sources differ slightly on its ordinal placement: Wikipedia treats it under Cladophorales, while GBIF's taxonomic backbone places it in Siphonocladales; both agree on the family. The genus comprises roughly a dozen recognized species (13 per Wikipedia's taxonomic summary; 9 accepted in the GBIF backbone), described by Decaisne in 1842.
Thalli are built from visibly hollow, hexagonal or polygonal cells and are monostromatic or polystromatic depending on species. Growth forms range from solid, button-shaped thalli around 1–5 cm across to spherical or club-shaped forms exceeding 1 cm, with individual cells around 300–500 μm in diameter. There is no complex rhizoidal system, but basal cells attach firmly to the substrate, and coloration ranges from grass green to bluish. The multinucleate cells carry numerous discoid chloroplasts, each with a single pyrenoid wrapped in a starch sheath. The life cycle shows a biphasic, isomorphic alternation of generations, producing quadriflagellate zoospores and isogamous, biflagellate gametes, alongside asexual reproduction by thallus fragmentation.
Dictyosphaeria grows in tropical shallow intertidal to subtidal zones, typically on coral or rocky rubble in reef flats, where it can become the dominant macroalgae. This tendency has an ecological downside: in Kāneʻohe Bay, Hawaiʻi, D. cavernosa became invasive following decades of nutrient pollution from coastal development and reduced grazing pressure from herbivorous fish, smothering coral from as early as 1970 before an abrupt population crash around 2006 linked to a prolonged cloudy, rainy period that reduced light availability. Species in the genus also have documented ecological and biochemical interactions: D. ocellata alters the surrounding bacterioplankton community on contact, and D. sericea and D. versluysii yield novel natural products (dictyosphaerin, and the fungus-derived dictyosphaeric acids and carviolin) of research interest. Economically, D. cavernosa is used locally as fish bait and animal feed.
