Duroia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae, placed in the order Gentianales. It was described by Carl Linnaeus the Younger (the standard author abbreviation "L.f." recorded by GBIF) and published in the Supplementum Plantarum in 1782. GBIF's backbone lists 46 taxa under the name, including a handful of now-superseded synonyms — Coupoui, Coupuia, Coupuya, Cupirana, Cupuia, Pubeta, and Schachtia — reflecting a history of repeated re-description before the genus was consolidated under its current name.

Species in the genus are native to the Neotropics, ranging from Costa Rica through tropical South America, with much of their diversity concentrated in the Amazon basin.

Duroia is best known outside specialist botany for a striking piece of chemical and ecological defense. Several species, and possibly all of them, appear capable of allelopathy — biochemical suppression of the growth of neighbouring plants. In Duroia hirsuta this has been traced to plumericin, a potent tetracyclic iridoid lactone isolated from root extracts. In the Amazonian understory, this chemical defense is reinforced by a resident leafcutter ant, Myrmelachista schumanni, which nests in and around Duroia hirsuta trees and actively kills competing vegetation nearby by injecting and spraying it with formic acid. Together, the plant's own growth inhibitor and the ants' chemical warfare clear wide, near-monospecific patches of forest floor dominated by the host tree — a phenomenon known locally as "Devil's garden." The ants are not disinterested partners: in exchange for their protection, the host tree is subjected to a higher rate of leaf-cutting than it would otherwise experience, making the association a costly but effective mutualism.

The genus also has a long documentary history: a Duroia plant, together with the insects living on it, was already being illustrated by 1705 in Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, one of the earliest European studies of Surinamese natural history.

Distribution

Duroia ranges from Costa Rica through tropical South America, with its greatest diversity in the Amazon basin.

Ecology

Several, and possibly all, Duroia species are allelopathic, chemically suppressing the growth of neighbouring plants; in Duroia hirsuta this has been traced to the root-derived growth inhibitor plumericin. In the Amazon understory this effect is reinforced by the resident ant Myrmelachista schumanni, which kills surrounding vegetation with formic acid, producing wide plant-free clearings known locally as "Devil's gardens." In return for this protection, the host tree suffers increased leaf-cutting by its resident ants.
