Ebenus Genus

Ebenus is a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae (subfamily Faboideae, tribe Hedysareae), first described by Linnaeus in 1753. It comprises around 20–21 species, with its centre of diversity in Turkey and a range extending from Morocco and Egypt in the west, through Greece and Turkey, to Iran and the western Himalayas in the east.

Plants in the genus are typically shrublets, often somewhat woody and spiny toward the base, though some species outside the core Middle Eastern range grow as unarmed herbs; they are perennial and covered in soft pubescent or villous hairs. Leaves are imparipinnate (odd-pinnate), bearing 3 to 15 entire leaflets. Flowers are clustered into dense, axillary, stalked (pedunculate) heads or spikes, subtended by small bracts, without bracteoles. The calyx is fused (gamosepalous) with roughly equal teeth, and the corolla is purple or yellow; the keel petal is incurved and blunt, about equal in length to the standard (vexillum). Each flower has ten stamens fused into a single bundle (monadelphous). The fruit is a small, indehiscent, single-seeded pod that remains enclosed within the persistent calyx.

The genus's name derives from the Latin ebenus (an alternative form of hebenus), itself from the Ancient Greek hébenos/ébenos, meaning "ebony" — the same root historically applied, confusingly, to an unrelated genus of true ebony trees now placed in Diospyros (family Ebenaceae). The type species of Ebenus is Ebenus cretica, the Cretan ebony, a silvery-leaved shrublet endemic to Crete.
