Polycarpon is a small genus of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae (the pink or carnation family), within the order Caryophyllales. Commonly known as manyseeds, the genus comprises approximately seven accepted species of low-growing annuals found across temperate and tropical regions of the world.
Plants in this genus are characteristically diminutive and mat-forming, with slender stems that either spread prostrate along the ground or ascend with many branches. The habit and small stature are typical of the broader Caryophyllaceae family, which includes chickweeds and sandworts. Leaves are small and opposite or whorled in appearance.
The genus has a broad global distribution spanning western North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and West, South, and Southeast Asia. The best-known member is Polycarpon tetraphyllum (fourleaf manyseed), native to southern Europe but now widely naturalized far beyond its original range as an introduced species. Other notable members include Polycarpon depressum (California manyseed), endemic to western North America, and Polycarpon alsinifolium, also described from Mediterranean regions.
Etymology
The genus name Polycarpon derives from the Greek words polys (many) and karpos (fruit or seed), a reference to the prolific seed production that characterizes these plants. This same meaning is reflected in the common name "manyseeds."
Distribution
Polycarpon species occur across temperate and tropical zones worldwide, with native ranges spanning western North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and West, South, and Southeast Asia. Polycarpon tetraphyllum, the most widespread species, is native to southern Europe and has been introduced and naturalized across many additional regions.
