Pterophylla Genus

Pterophylla is a genus of trees in the family Cunoniaceae (order Oxalidales), comprising 68 accepted species. The genus was formerly included within the large genus Weinmannia and was later segregated as a distinct lineage based on morphological and molecular evidence. Its species are distributed across a wide tropical and subtropical arc extending from Madagascar and the Comoro Islands through Malesia — encompassing Peninsular Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, Sulawesi, Maluku, and the Philippines — into Papuasia (New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and the Solomon Islands) and across the Pacific to Vanuatu, New Caledonia, New Zealand, and remote Oceanian islands including Fiji, the Cook Islands, the Marquesas, Samoa, the Society Islands, and the Tubuai Islands.

The genus is divided into four sections: Pterophylla (formerly Fasciculatae), Leiospermum, Spicatae, and Inspersae. Ecologically, species occupy a range of forested habitats — from lowland tropical forests in Madagascar to hill and montane rainforests on the larger islands of Malesia and the Pacific, typically between 300 and 750 metres elevation. In New Zealand the genus extends into subtropical and temperate forest from sea level to approximately 1180 metres. Pterophylla species are notably absent from low-lying coralline islands but can be locally abundant on the higher volcanic islands of Oceania.

Distribution

Species of Pterophylla occur naturally in Madagascar and the Comoro Islands, throughout Malesia (Peninsular Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, Sulawesi, Maluku, and the Philippines), across Papuasia (New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, Solomon Islands), and into the Pacific (Vanuatu, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Fiji, Cook Islands, Marquesas, Samoa, Society Islands, and Tubuai Islands). They are absent from low coralline atolls but can be common on higher volcanic islands above 300 metres.

Ecology

Pterophylla species inhabit lowland tropical forests in Madagascar and predominantly hill and montane tropical forests on the larger islands of Malesia and the Pacific, generally from 300 to 750+ metres elevation. In New Zealand, the genus colonises subtropical and temperate forests across an elevational range of 0–1180 metres. The genus is restricted to islands with sufficient elevation and appears to be absent from flat coralline atolls throughout its Pacific range.

Taxonomy Notes

Pterophylla was formerly treated as part of Weinmannia (Cunoniaceae) before being recognised as a distinct genus. It belongs to the order Oxalidales within the eudicot class Magnoliopsida. The genus is subdivided into four sections — Pterophylla (formerly Fasciculatae), Leiospermum, Spicatae, and Inspersae — based on morphological characters.
