Virola is a genus of medium-sized tropical trees in the nutmeg family, Myristicaceae, placed in the order Magnoliales. The genus comprises approximately 71 accepted species, all native to the rainforests of tropical America, with a range spanning from southern Mexico south through Central America to Bolivia and southern Brazil.

Trees in this genus are distinguished by glossy, dark green leaves and small clusters of tiny yellow flowers. Some species emit a pungent odor. They are commonly known by the regional names epená, patricá, or cumala depending on locality. The genus is closely related to Myristica (the source of commercial nutmeg and mace), and several species formerly placed in Myristica have been reclassified into Virola.

Virola species are ecologically significant components of Neotropical rainforest canopies. Several species have long been used by indigenous Amazonian peoples to prepare hallucinogenic snuff powders (known as epená or yopo-related preparations) from the bark resin. Research into the bark and leaf chemistry of species such as Virola oleifera has revealed the presence of lignan-7-ols and verrucosin, compounds that exhibit antifungal properties against Cladosporium species. Due to the psychoactive constituents present in some members, possession and cultivation of Virola spp. is legally restricted in certain jurisdictions, including the state of Louisiana.

Distribution

Virola species are native to the tropical rainforests of the Americas, ranging from southern Mexico through Central America into South America as far south as Bolivia and southern Brazil. They are characteristic trees of lowland and montane Neotropical humid forests.

Cultural Uses

Several Virola species have been used by indigenous Amazonian peoples to prepare hallucinogenic snuff powders, commonly referred to as epená. The bark resin is processed and inhaled as an entheogen in ceremonial contexts. Due to these psychoactive properties, cultivation and possession of Virola spp. is prohibited in Louisiana (except for ornamental purposes) under Louisiana State Act 159.

Taxonomy Notes

Virola belongs to the family Myristicaceae, order Magnoliales — the same family as Myristica (commercial nutmeg). Some species formerly described under Myristica have been reclassified into Virola. Approximately 71 species are accepted within the genus.
