Voacanga is a genus of tropical flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae (order Gentianales), comprising approximately 13 recognised species. The genus is distributed across tropical Africa — from Senegal and Sudan south to the Cape Province and through central and eastern Africa — as well as Southeast Asia (including Java, Borneo, Sumatra, the Philippines, and Maluku), New Guinea, and northern Queensland, Australia.
Plants in the genus are typically shrubs or small trees with opposite, glossy leaves and clusters of tubular, often fragrant flowers characteristic of the Apocynaceae family. Like many members of that family, Voacanga species contain alkaloids of pharmacological interest; Voacanga africana in particular is a significant commercial source of voacamine and other indole alkaloids used as starting materials in the synthesis of vinpocetine, a compound used in cognitive supplements and some pharmaceutical preparations.
The genus was described within Apocynaceae, a large family that also encompasses well-known genera such as Nerium, Plumeria, and Tabernaemontana — the last of which absorbed several species formerly placed in Voacanga (e.g., V. dichotoma = Tabernaemontana pachysiphon). Notable members include Voacanga africana, widespread across sub-Saharan Africa; Voacanga thouarsii, found from Madagascar to Sudan and Senegal; Voacanga globosa, native to the Philippines; and Voacanga grandifolia, ranging across Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, and Queensland.
Distribution
Voacanga species grow across tropical Africa (from Senegal and Sudan south to the Cape Province, including West, Central, East, and South Africa), Madagascar, Southeast Asia (Java, Borneo, Sumatra, the Philippines, Maluku), New Guinea, and northern Queensland in Australia.
Cultural Uses
Voacanga africana is commercially harvested for its bark and seeds, which are rich in indole alkaloids — most notably voacamine — that serve as industrial starting materials for the semi-synthesis of vinpocetine, a compound used in cognitive health supplements and pharmaceutical preparations. The genus is thus economically significant in the alkaloid-chemistry trade.
Taxonomy Notes
Several species formerly placed in Voacanga have been transferred to the closely related genus Tabernaemontana: Voacanga dichotoma is now Tabernaemontana pachysiphon, and Voacanga plumeriifolia is now Tabernaemontana macrocarpa. The genus sits in Apocynaceae, order Gentianales, alongside Tabernaemontana, Nerium, and Plumeria.
