Warczewiczella is a small genus of epiphytic orchids in the family Orchidaceae, order Asparagales. The genus is native to the Neotropics, with species distributed across South America—including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana—as well as Central America (Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama) and Cuba. GBIF recognises approximately 7 species in the genus.
Warczewiczella orchids are characterised by their typically large, showy flowers and a growth habit associated with humid lowland and montane forest environments. The genus is closely allied to Chondrorhyncha and Zygopetalum, and has historically been subject to reclassification as taxonomic understanding of the Zygopetalinae subtribe has evolved. The two species most commonly encountered in cultivation and collections are Warczewiczella amazonica and Warczewiczella discolor, the latter being notable for its wide natural range spanning both South and Central America and the Caribbean.
Distribution
Warczewiczella is native to the Neotropics, with species found across South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana), Central America (Costa Rica, Honduras, and Panama), and Cuba. Many species are restricted to a single country or subregion, while Warczewiczella discolor has the broadest range in the genus.
Taxonomy Notes
Warczewiczella belongs to the subtribe Zygopetalinae within Orchidaceae (order Asparagales). The genus has a complex taxonomic history: species have been moved between Warczewiczella, Chondrorhyncha, and related genera as molecular and morphological studies have refined the limits of Zygopetalinae. GBIF currently accepts approximately 7 species in the genus.
