Werauhia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Tillandsioideae, the same subfamily that includes the familiar air plants (Tillandsia) and many ornamental bromeliads. The genus was established by the American botanist Jason Grant and named in honour of Werner Rauh (1913–2000), a prolific German botanist renowned for his extensive fieldwork on bromeliads and succulents in the Americas and Madagascar.

Most Werauhia species are epiphytes — plants that grow anchored to trees or rocky surfaces rather than in soil — and are native to tropical regions of Central America and northern South America. They are characteristic of humid montane forests, cloud forests, and lowland rainforests, where they often grow in the forest canopy alongside other bromeliads and orchids.

The genus was circumscribed largely on the basis of molecular phylogenetic evidence that showed several species formerly placed in Vriesea and Tillandsia formed a distinct evolutionary lineage. This reclassification reflects the broader revision of Tillandsioideae that has repositioned hundreds of species as DNA data have accumulated. Werauhia currently encompasses more than 80 accepted species, including taxa such as Werauhia singuliflora, Werauhia gigantea, and Werauhia gladioliflora, which span a range of growth forms and flower structures characteristic of the subfamily.

Etymology

The genus name Werauhia honours Werner Rauh (1913–2000), a German botanist and professor who conducted extensive research on bromeliads and succulents across the Americas and Madagascar. The genus was formally described by the botanist Jason R. Grant.

Distribution

Werauhia species are distributed across tropical regions of the Americas, with the greatest diversity in Central America and the Andes of northern South America. Individual species have been recorded from Costa Rica, Panama, and Caribbean islands including Guadeloupe, reflecting the genus's affinity for humid montane and cloud-forest environments.

Taxonomy Notes

Werauhia was segregated from Vriesea and Tillandsia based on molecular phylogenetic evidence, and belongs to subfamily Tillandsioideae within Bromeliaceae. The genus was described by J.R. Grant (published 1995). Multiple checklist databases reflect different species counts as reclassifications continue; the GBIF backbone recognises more than 100 infraspecific taxa.
