Alluaudia dumosa aka Alluaudia Dumosa
Taxonomy ID: 5597
Alluaudia dumosa is a spiny succulent shrub or small tree. It belongs to the Didiereaceae family and grows in southern Madagascar. Its home range includes dry scrub and thorn forest. There, it grows at heights of 328–2,953 feet [100–900 metres] above sea level. It grows slowly and sheds its leaves.
In gardens, plants may reach 10 feet [3.05 metres] tall. They can spread to 4 feet [1.22 metres] wide. Wild plants can reach 25 feet [7.62 metres] in height. One account gives an upper height near 26 feet [8 metres]. Wild plants may spread to 15 feet [4.57 metres]. The plant forms many branches, with stems that rise or arch. These long, round stems have a grey-green tone. Small spines dot their surface, and most stems lack leaves.
Small groups of cream-white flowers grow along the branches. Bloom follows the season rather than a stated month range. Male and female flowers grow on separate plants. Both sexes must grow together to produce fruit and seed. Growers can raise new plants from seed or stem cuttings. Seeds sprout best at 22–25°C. Mature wood also serves as cutting material.
Give this plant full sun or some shade. It needs soil that drains well, such as sandy loam. Water during active growth, but cut back sharply during winter rest. Established plants cope with some drought and dry soil. Soil may range from evenly moist to dry during growth. Avoid soil that stays soaked, since roots and stems can rot. Missouri Botanical Garden lists hardiness from USDA zone 9b through 11. It reports no major pest or disease concerns. The plant suits rock gardens and dry garden beds. Its branching form also works as a single accent plant. It can grow in a pot indoors as a houseplant.
People harvest wild plants for wood and local medicinal use. The wood serves for utensils, boxes, and crates. A boiled stem preparation has traditional uses for toothache and mouth cleansing. These reported uses do not establish that such treatments work. Useful Tropical Plants lists no known food uses or hazards. That does not confirm safety for people or pets. The plant's small spines remain a clear physical feature to consider.
