Anacampseros telephiastrum aka Sunrise
Taxonomy ID: 2164
Anacampseros telephiastrum is a small succulent subshrub from South Africa. It belongs to the family Anacampserotaceae. Its native range includes the Karoo and nearby dry regions. It grows on dry ground strewn with stones and pebbles. Bushes and rock ledges provide shade in these sites. The RHS lists Anacampseros varians among its synonyms. This plant is not native to Britain or Ireland.
Several rosettes grow together and spread into a low mat. Thick stems branch freely as the plant develops. The crowded leaves are fleshy, with oval to near-round shapes. Each can reach about 0.07 feet [0.02 metres] long and wide. Leaves may look green or brown, with red beneath. Mature leaves lack hairs, though short threads grow in their axils. Papery stipules have fringed edges. Strong light and lean soil can help form a caudex. Shade and rich feeding can lead to loose, straggling growth.
Pink flowers open during the afternoon and have many stamens. Each flower spans about 0.10–0.11 feet [0.03–0.035 metres]. Branched racemes carry one to four blooms. These flower stems reach about 0.33 feet [0.10 metres]. The seeds have broad wings. Young plants grow slowly at first. They need to reach about 0.66 feet [0.20 metres] across before flowering. That flowering threshold does not establish their final mature spread.
In pots, this species needs a gritty mix that drains freely. Keep the mix low in peat, humus, and other organic matter. Sandy or rocky soil suits outdoor plants when drainage is good. Increase watering in spring as fresh growth starts. Water through summer, but let excess water leave the pot. Do not leave pots standing in a water-filled tray. Reduce watering from late summer, then keep plants dry through winter. LLIFLE advises a dry winter rest at 5–10°C.
Cold and excess water pose the main risks in cultivation. Poor drainage can lead to rot. Winter airflow matters, while damp air during rest is best avoided. Excess water and shade can produce swollen, untidy growth. Handle the sensitive roots with care when repotting. Stem cuttings and seed offer ways to raise new plants. Its low mats and pink blooms provide its ornamental appeal.
